Your First iPhone: Complete Beginner's Guide

Just bought your first iPhone or planning to get one soon? This comprehensive guide covers everything you need to know to set up your iPhone, transfer your old data, and get the most out of it.

Getting started with your first iPhone step by step

1. Create an Apple ID

The first thing you'll need is an Apple ID. This is your gateway to all Apple services, such as iCloud (online storage) and the App Store. We recommend creating this during the initial startup process when you first turn on your iPhone.

Would you rather do it later? Then open the App Store, tap the sign-in button, and select "Create New Apple ID."

Do you already have other Apple devices? Then you probably already have an Apple ID. Log in to your iPhone with it, and you can automatically sync all your data via iCloud. Photos, contacts, notes—everything is instantly available on your new device.

2. Secure access to your iPhone

Security starts with a strong passcode. But why stop there? Newer iPhone models support Face ID for facial recognition. Set this up in Settings > Face ID & Passcode .

Do you have an iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, or iPhone SE? Then you can use Touch ID for fingerprint recognition. Go to Settings > Touch ID & Passcode to enable it.

3. Turn on 'Find My iPhone'

This feature is essential in case of loss or theft. It allows you to:

  • Lock your iPhone remotely
  • Play a sound
  • Display a message on the screen
  • View your iPhone's location on a map
  • Remotely erase all data

Activate this feature via Settings , tap your name at the top and go to 'Find My' .

4. Transfer your old data

Moving from Android? Then download the "Move to iOS" app on your old Android phone. This handy tool helps you transfer all your contacts, photos, calendars, and other data to your iPhone in one go. No hassle with manual data entry!

Already have an iPhone? You can easily restore a backup via iCloud or your computer.

5. Configure the Control Panel

The Control Center gives you quick access to frequently used functions.

Here's how to open it:

  • iPhone with Face ID: Swipe down from the top-right corner
  • iPhone with Home button (such as iPhone 8 or SE): Swipe up from the bottom

Customize it to your preferences via Settings > Control Center . Add what you find useful: flashlight, timer, camera, Apple TV remote, and more.

6. Meet Siri

Siri is your personal assistant who helps you answer questions, find information, and control your iPhone. You can set up Siri during initial setup, or later in Settings > Siri & Search .

It's entirely up to you whether you want to use Siri, but it's definitely worth trying. With the right settings, you can even control your iPhone entirely with your voice.
